Resisting Recession
Economic Commentary Highlights...
•Progress toward a resolution of Europe’s fiscal issues, a long-term solution to our own “fiscal cliff,” and a reinvigorated Chinese economy could help the U.S. economy reaccelerate.
•We continue to forecast 2% gross domestic product (GDP) growth for 2012.
•We still expect the Fed to boost the economy with a third round of quantitative easing (QE3) before year-end.

The Budget Bombshell
Market Commentary Highlights...
- In one week, President Obama is due to submit his budget. The 2013 budget is already going to have the biggest impact since the end of WWII, even if no action is taken in Washington.
- The fiscal headwind under current policy totals over $500 billion, or 3.5% of GDP. The United States has never experienced a deficit cut by more than 2% of GDP that did not end in a sharp decline in GDP.
- The risk that a budget deal to mitigate this potential impact does not happen should keep markets from moving steadily higher in 2012, as they have done year-to-date, without a reality check.

Current Conditions Index
- Over the past week, the LPL Financial Current Conditions Index remained rose to 248. The highest reading since January of last year. Supporting what is likely to be an above average growth rate for fourth quarter GDP when reported. The path of the CCI remains consistent with continued economic
growth in the United States.
- The growth momentum in the index has picked up lately with the 13 week change in the index turning positive and the 52 week change moderating it’s contraction.

The CCI provides real-time context and insight into the trends that shape our recommended actions to manage portfolios. This index has proven to be a useful tool for investment decision making.
This weekly index is not intended to be a leading index or predictive of where conditions are headed, but a coincident measure of where they are right now. We want to track the conditions in real-time to aid in investment decision making. There are thousands of indicators-some lead the economy, some lag, while others merely offer a lot of statistical noise. We chose to create our own index tailored to the current environment to provide the clearest and most useful way to track conditions. The components of the CCI are periodically changed to retune the index to those factors most critical to the markets and economy so it may continue to be a valuable investment decision-making tool.

Cinderella: The Last Chapter
Market Commentary Highlights...It is appropriate that this past Friday, March 4, marked both the 61st anniversary of the release of Disney’s Cinderella and the release of the February employment report that helps to tell the final chapter of the Cinderella story of the economic and market turnaround of the past two years. While GDP, consumer spending, and the stock market are at or near all-time highs and the manufacturing sector is booming, job growth has lagged in this economic rags-to-riches story leaving it incomplete. Friday’s market action and soaring oil prices serve as a reminder that even as the last chapter of this Cinderella story unfolds, new stories are being written that may be less favorable for the markets. At Last
Economic Commentary Highlights... - Economics, policy, and politics will fight for room in the headlines this week, as the long awaited First Week in November finally unfolds.
- Some observers think QE2 will allow inflation expectations to become unhinged. In our view, the risk of deflation outweighs the risk of inflation by a wide margin.
- The third quarter GDP data argued against the so-called “double-dip” recession camp, as the modest gain in real GDP marked the fifth consecutive quarterly gain in GDP since the end of Q2 2009.
